Texas Hill Country Magazine - Highlighting the best features and natural wonders of the Texas Hill Country
Chow in the Hills

Not everyone can be fortunate enough to live in the Lake Area of the Hill Country, but those who do count the blessings daily.

When you come to see our lakes, whether for the magnificent Llano Eagles Nest, Bluebonnets to the horizon, finest deer hunting in the USA, fishing the blue waters or for any other reason, I want you to know about my favorite Chow Halls.

Without doubt, the best-known eatery is The Tamale King, which is located on Lake Buchanan’s Highway 29 just east of its intersection with Highway 1431. Featured are a rich variety of Mexican dishes perfected by The King over several years of working top restaurants from Arizona to Marble Falls. In the few years since moving to this area, the Tamale King has expanded several times and never once has the quality of food or service fallen below excellent.

The noon menu features a variety of specials offered at very reasonable prices and a selection of a la cart items that are a real bargain. The evening menu features carefully selected dinners with more than enough selections to please any group you may bring. Even those who do not care for Mexican style foods will find an adequate selection of Texas cuisine, hamburgers and steak.

The restaurant started in 1997 when a pretty young blond and her kids set up shop selling homemade Tamales out of a cooler. The Tamale King Tamales were a big hit and things grew into the Tamale King of today. Tim, The King, and Queen Gina are in constant attendance and are two of the nicest people you will meet in the Hills. Say "hi" to them when you go there.

Never once have we found the wait staff to be less than excellent and the food is always outstanding; just remember that Sunday is the day of rest for the King and his Court. They open at ll:00 am the rest of the week.
