Located just eight miles to the west of the growing town of Hondo, D’Hanis, Texas is a small town rich with history, and the epitome of what small towns are supposed to be.
Arriving on a cool, overcast morning in November, I was scheduled to meet with several people from D’Hanis at one of the oldest establishments, The Country Mart.
While many healthcare companies provide mostly “sick care” – performing surgeries, treating illnesses, and healing wounds – a new health brand in New Braunfels is focusing just as much on wellness as it does on illness. It’s all part of the company’s goal to improve the health and wellbeing of Comal, Guadalupe, and Hays Counties by empowering residents to prevent health problems before they begin.
“Resolute Health is taking a completely unique approach to healthcare,” said CEO ...

When Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels came upon the beautiful Comal River in March 1845, he purchased land at the site and named the settlement New Braunfels in honor of his German estate back home. “It is a cheerful sight to see this beauty spot of nature developing,” he later reported to his superiors, “and the land becoming occupied.”
Then and now, the crystal-clear waters of both the Comal and nearby Guadalupe rivers continue to draw people to this charming Hill Country city that br ...

It doesn’t look like much at first. Just a big stack of scrap in Vince Hannemann’s backyard. Only when you get close enough to examine it—and go inside it—do you realize his mother was right. This is a Cathedral of Junk.
You know something is different about this place from the moment you drive up to the unassuming bungalow in South Austin.

Club Victoria is the largest indoor community center in Menard, often used for public civic and charitable events, the most recent of which was the Hunter’s Blowout in November. It is also well-known in the western Hill Country area as a popular dancehall, featuring Tejano music through the years and fostering the early careers of numerous now-famous Tejano musicians, singers and songwriters.

Step inside Dick’s Classic Garage in San Marcos and it looks like the biggest, brightest, cleanest garage you’ve ever seen. But what it is, is a museum. A museum displaying all those old cars you wish you had owned or wish you’d never gotten rid of.
The museum displays classic cars from 1929 to 1959 in several large rooms, along with antique oil and gas pumps.

Some things just never change. Thankfully, for music lovers who treasure a true Texas two-step, Helotes’ historic honky-tonk, Floore’s Country Store, is one. For more than six decades, generations, young and old, thirsting for longnecks and legendary musical performances have Cotton-Eye Joed across the well-worn dance floor of this venerable, old roadhouse where the bands are hot, the beer cold and a formula for fun established in 1946 keeps things cooking just fine – Lone Star style.

Want to beat your buddies by bagging a very special kind of bass? Something they’ve never seen? A fish they may not have even heard of – unless, of course, they’ve spent some time casting around in the Texas Hill Country. One of the best places to catch this local specialty is in the cool, clear waters of Lake Lyndon B.
